Ieng Sary taken to hospital to take medical check
Former Khmer Rouge Foreign Minister Ieng Sary was taken to Calmette Hospital to take medical check at 10 a.m., 29 April as the Khmer Rouge tribunal was holding trial of former Khmer Rouge Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch. But Ieng Sary does not suffer from emergency illness.
After Ieng Sary was driven from detention cell, tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath told reporters that the decision to take Ieng Sary to hospital is to take medical check which is a routine task of the doctors. But Ieng Sary does not suffer from serious illness.
Duch denies S-21 was a unique prison
Former Khmer Rouge regime’s Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch denied in a 29 April’s hearing that detention camp S-21 or Tuol Sleng prison was a unique prison. The statement was to release charges of the defendant Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch.
Responding to questions put by civil party’s co-defense lawyer, Duch said that ‘S-21’ was not a unique police office because those who were given rights to order police office throughout the country were four groups – the seven zone secretaries, the central committee, the standing committee, and Son Sen.
Decision to charge more K Rouge suspects to be made early June
An oral hearing over disagreement between national co-prosecutor and international co-prosecutor to charge additional Khmer Rouge suspects will be held on 5 June 2009, according to a press statement released 24 April 2009 by international co-prosecutor Robert Petit of the Khmer Rouge tribunal. On 24 April 2009, the Chamber directed the Co-Prosecutors to separately respond, before 22 May 2009, to certain questions formulated by the Chamber concerning the Disagreement, and to file replies to each other’s responses by 29 May 2009, the press statement reads.
Netherlands to continue funding Khmer Rouge tribunal
Evaluating that the Khmer Rouge tribunal has made a progress, Tjaco Van Den Hout, Dutch ambassador to Cambodia claimed that the Dutch side would continue its assistance so the tribunal moves forward successfully. The ambassador raised the issue once he met with Son Saphoeun, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on 21 April at the Foreign Ministry office.
Duch counsel rejects evidence documents
In a two-week long hearing in the case of former Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, co-defense lawyer Francois Roux representing Duch rejected a response of victims. The response was considered evidence describing brutal torture and murder ordered by Duch.
Duch hearing continued as Cambodian staff are facing wage crisis for April
A hearing of former Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch will be continued on 20 April without delay though the Cambodian side’s staffer are facing a new monthly wage problem, according to a Khmer Rouge tribunal official. Tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath said on Saturday, 18 April that Duch’s hearing would be proceeding as scheduled. But the monthly wages for all the Cambodian side’s staffer and officials for the month of April have not existed.
