Cambodia, in the Kampuchea Democratic regime, which led by Pol Pot, has made the nation damaged in all sectors, including infrastructure, society, economy, religion, and education sector to zero. And millions of citizen in both gender were killed. The fall of this regime remains many challenges to the nation such as orphans, widows, handicaps, and social, economic, and educational infrastructure, which have to be rebuilt from nothing.
Discussing and finding solutions on Cambodian genocide are based on research on genocides those have been taken places around the world like Rwanda and Yugoslavia. The genocide happened in Cambodian society was chosen by the United Nations to be resolved to find justice for victims in the regime. For the meantime we have heard news about the Khmer Rouge trial, which the genocide committed during 1975-1979. For the development of the preparation of proceeding for the trial of senior Khmer Rouge leaders, the Royal Cambodian Government and the United Nations actively discussed, and the National Assembly ratified on the agreement between the two parties.
In 1997 the Royal Government of Cambodia proposed the United Nations to establish a court to try the senior Khmer Rouge leader. In 2001 the National Assembly approved law on the establishment of court for the Prosecution of Crimes Committed during the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge regime. This court is called Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia for the Prosecution of Crimes Committed during the Period of Democratic Kampuchea.
Crime in the Khmer Rouge period does not only against Cambodian people, but also humanity as a whole. Therefore Cambodian people need to cooperate with the international community to try those responsible, by doing so will help creating a culture that prevent new genocide around the world.
At the present time, the five senior leaders and most responsible people for the Khmer Rouge regime are being detained awaiting trial at the Khmer Rouge tribunal on charges of the crimes against humanity and war crimes. Those people in Khmer Rouge regime include Nuon Chea, former President of the National Assembly and Brother Number Two, Khieu Samphan, former President of the State Presidium, Ieng Sary, deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ieng Thirith, former Social Actions Minister, and Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, former director of Tuol Sleng prison.
Cambodians living inside and outside the country want the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders to get underway to reveal the masterminds of the Khmer Rouge regime and reasons for the mass murder during the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror. If the trial is still delayed, those [ageing] Khmer Rouge leaders might die before the trial takes place and all the mysteries will be buried with them.
Relevant events of the establishment of the Khmer Rouge trial have been paid attentions by Cambodian citizens as well as the international community. But all these related issues of the Khmer Rouge trial are not sufficient and these are not well disseminated to a large number of people.
Realizing this as crucial, Blog system of the Khmer Rouge Trial Web Portal will be set up in order to share current news and information on blog and push readers to participate in making discussion about the KRT and to encourage people share their thoughts, ideas and observations on such issues by promoting electronic communications and information exchange among them. Experiences and lesson learned on nation and international tribunal also encouraged to be shared to provide Cambodian people opportunities to learn from different countries on such issue.
